FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS

WHO NEEDS PELVIC PHYSIOTHERAPY?

Any person with a pelvis may need pelvic health physiotherapy! Men may experience incontinence, pain or dysfunction relating to common conditions that our therapists treat. Women may experience incontinence, pain or dysfunction due to sport, pregnancy, childbirth and gynaecological conditions. We also see Transgender and Non-Binary people for their pelvic health. Children may experience incontinence, bed-wetting or constipation and our therapists can help with this too.

DO I NEED A DOCTOR’S REFERRAL?

No, you can book without a referral.

However, you may have been referred by a surgeon or other doctor. If you have, please bring any letters, scans, and reports your Doctor has given you to help your treatment plan. If your GP referred you with a Chronic Disease Management Plan (Care Plan), then you must bring the referral documents to be able to claim your Medicare rebate.

DO YOU ACCEPT HEALTH INSURANCE OR MEDICARE?

We accept and process private health insurance through HICAPS and Medipass (claiming health insurance online).

We accept Medicare Chronic Disease Management Plan (Care Plan) referrals for Physiotherapy from your GP, however we are unable to Bulk Bill these. You will pay the appointment fee in full and Medicare will rebate you the set amount from that fee.

We can treat you under a Self or Plan-Managed NDIS Plan if your condition is related to your disability. We charge no Gap fee for NDIS.

We are currently unable to claim DVA, Work Cover and TAC.

HOW MANY APPOINTMENTS MAY I NEED?

Pelvic Physiotherapy generally requires fewer appointments than general physiotherapy. This is because we aim to give you the tools to manage your condition at home.

For most people with incontinence after birth, after prostatectomy, or around menopause you may have 4-8 physio sessions over 3-6 months.

For people with chronic pelvic pain, or pelvic organ prolapse we might see you between 6 and 10 times over 6-12 months.

That being said, every person we see is different, and we will always try our best to work with what's feasible for you, so the sessions and timeframes may vary.

Patient Education: FAQ

DO I HAVE TO HAVE AN INTERNAL EXAMINATION?

Pelvic Health Physiotherapy utilises a variety of different assessment and treatment options. For adult patients, if it is necessary to assess and treat your condition then we may offer an internal examination (vaginal or rectal depending on your anatomy / your issue). We will only proceed with your full understanding and consent!

For those who choose not to have the internal examination, we can still assess you using ultrasound or complete an external assessment of your pelvic floor. Each assessment we offer gives us different information and helps us plan your treatment in different ways.

We do not do internal assessments on patients under 18 years of age. For children we assess with ultrasound on the tummy.

For more information about what to expect in your first session, you can read about it in this blog article.
